SNOWSTORM FUN
An early, major snowstorm has hit Milwaukee today. But I'm not sure it can compete with the one that landed on Evanston in 1978. Six feet of snow piled up on our front lawn. Our house was at the very end of a one block street, providing the only access to the main junction. The street had been plowed but a huge mound of snow was left at the end our driveway. Undeterred, Steve drove off and got stuck trying to make the turn, virtually blocking off everyone else on the street. He left his car for me to get it towed and walked off to the train. The next morning, same thing happened with my car.
Around ten that morning, my across the street neighbor called, asking, "how many more days is this going to happen?"
I said, "None. We're out of cars." Fortunately we were friends and had a good laugh together about it.
School was cancelled, of course. I called my nearby friends and neighbors to bring their children over to play in the attic while we enjoyed wine and cheese in the family room downstairs out of ear shot. About eight of us got a little drunk but what a great way to spend time together. By dinnertime, the children had run out of games and everyone headed home.
On the weekend, the family had a snowball fight, girls against the boys. The boys were winning, so Sarah, Rebeccah and I went off in a huff, pretending to be annoyed. Once inside, we grabbed buckets, ran into the back yard and filled them with snow. When Steve, Matt, Josh and Ben came inside looking sheepish, we dumped the snow on them, right in the house. Luckily, the floors were tiled so no harm done and everyone had a good laugh.

I can picture this!!
