The Eyes Have It

When I was a little girl, I never fit in with the popular crowd. My sister Sandy was ten years older and Eleanor six years older. They didn't give me the sibling support that they gave each other which made me something of a loner. There were other reasons of course. I was skinny and wore glasses from the age of two. My right eye turned in every other day which was something of a surprise to the many ophthalmologists my parents sought out. My mother could plan photography day for me weeks ahead, knowing which day my eyes would be straight.

Finally, around my seventh birthday, Dr. Theodore Zekman agreed to operate and fixed that problem. But it was too late to stop the taunts from other children. I heard "four eyes" and "crazy eye" from other children which fostered caution in me. And a self image that has stayed with me, regardless of the facts. Childhood is a powerful experience that needs to be respected.

A few weeks ago, I visited the nearby eye clinic to get the lenses in my glasses upgraded. Having had my cataracts removed several years ago and my eyesight improved to 20/20 at that time, I haven't needed glasses until now and only for reading. The first thing the optician said to me was, "You have beautiful eyes." Really, I thought? Of course I do look in the mirror and see the color and the shape, but I've never thought of them as beautiful. Those childhood taunts live on forever. 

Preschool and Head Start did not exist when I was a child. Perhaps if it had been available, an adult would have stepped in to stop the taunts and help the children accept differences. I read this morning that this valuable program may be slashed for no other insignificant reason than funding. To me, nothing is more important than providing every child with a positive experience for both the tauntees and the tauntors. It's those early years than make the difference in the way we view ourselves and others. Please make sure that whoever you support and vote for knows how important Head Start is for the millions of children who live in this country. Their commitment to maintaining this vital program is essential.

    I thought I knew so much about you and your young life. Never knew about your wandering eye. That must have been so hard. Leave it to you to have the issue every other day! I would not have teased you.

    Tough to have eye problems at the beginning and now face a change. I am with you are retaining Head Start, a critical program for decades. What important program will Trump cancel next?

    This isn't really a story about eyes. As children we develop a self image of ourselves; our looks, intelligence, capabilities. It's the most relevant time in our lives and it stays with us to the end. That's why Head Start and all early learning programs are so essential. Please support them!

Slowing Down

I've always loved entertaining family and friends in my home. For nearly twenty years, I prepared dinner for seven people almost every day of the week. Then there were the dinner parties for twelve or the buffets for twenty. I've lost track. But I do remember putting together menus, standing in the kitchen for two, sometimes, three hours. Never gave it a thought. I don't remember complaining, so I know enjoyed it. I was a pretty good cook. No complaints except on the nights I was trying to use up leftovers creatively. And everyone remembers the brussel sprout cranberry disaster during Steve's vegetarian days. This past weekend, I prepared brunch for eight people, my daughter and son-in-law along with wonderful friends and two of their grandsons. Finding a New Path

I'm not fond of the word widow. To me, it conjures up black robes, wrinkles and sadness. It's not synonymous with the word crone or wisdom, both of which I embrace wholeheartedly as the true inheritance of a woman who has lived well and past her prime. But I was searching for a word that might describe a woman who had recently lost her husband or partner; a person such as myself.  A grief group was not for me. Just the title depressed me. Between my son Ben and husband Steve, both of whom struggled for a long time with a fatal disease before their deaths, I'd had years of grief in my life and was looking for a way forward, through, and out of that heavy burden. Newly Single Women's Group is the phrase I conjured up to create a support group for those of us searching for new paths in our ever changing world.
